History

Persian kilim and rug weaving started during the Bronze Age in ancient Persia. Many environmental, regional, cultural, socioeconomic and political factors led to the making of rugs and kilims in ancient Persia. Technique

Persian kilims use the asymmetrical or single loop knotting system to bind the threads together. Vertical and horizontal, both types of looms are used in their making. Curvilinear and rectilinear designs are most popular. Wool is the most used material both in its natural state and also after dyeing. Cotton and silk kilims are also made. Greater the knot counts per square inch in the warp, finer the quality of the rug. Women and girls form the huge majority of artisans.
